Education

Our programmes are geared towards solving the basic problem of survival in Kenya. After ensuring that the children have acquired basic goods such as shelter, food and medical care, we focus our efforts to improve their future perspectives; the education of the children being main catalytic component behind this philosophy. Indeed, education constitutes the main incentive towards securing a better and brighter future, with dignity, for the children. Schooling gives them new perspectives, helps them to socialise and eventually to reverting back to a life on the streets with lurking dangers.

“I adopt a child” Programme

It constitutes the main axis of the Foundation’s activities, as through this programme we provide breakfast, lunch, medical care and education to more than 3000 children in Kenya. In this way, we ensure that children have an added, more important motive for attending school. Within the framework of this same programme, we also offer school books, stationery and basic provisions, thus reinforcing the learning progress of children.

The programme “I adopt a child”, functions on the basis of donations, which start from the amount of 20 euros per month per child. The donations can be made through a standing order or / and by depositing the amount in specific accounts, as detailed in the relevant forms on our website.

“Makarios” Children Home

The “Sophia Foundation for Children” has undertaken as a first step, the construction of the new and renovation of old premises of the Makarios Children’s Home in Nyeri, Kenya. This orphanage houses approximately 150 children, many of whom are HBV and/or HIV carriers or even ill with AIDS.

The whole reconstruction has cost over 400,000 euros, money we have obtained from donations and sponsorships.

Following this, the Foundation has undertaken the daily running and maintenance of the home and care of the children, by providing for them full board, clothing, healthcare, education and recreation.

After their graduation from primary school, we ensure the children’s attendance boarding schools for secondary education, away from the orphanage, thus giving them the opportunity of social reintegration and further education.

Subsequently, after secondary school we implement our ‘exit plan’, which involves the final training of the children before they leave our protection and go out into the real world. With this plan all children receive technical studies and training in a trade of their choice (carpentry, food catering, clothes making, hair- dressing, jewellery etc).

For the children who manage to pass the entry exams for university, we undertake to secure the necessary fees for their entry. This last goal lies at the core of our philosophy; to give a child in need the opportunity not only to survive the day, but to grow up with dignity and care equipped with the tools necessary to change his/her fate and thus break the vicious circle of poverty, violence and disease.

Supporting Children in Prison

The Foundation supports children who are kept in several juvenile prisons such as in Nakuru and Nyeri in Kenya, providing them with clothes, shoes and toys. At the same time we fight for the freedom of the children and when we manage to get as many of them out of prison under our custody, we secure their safety, food and education. For this purpose we either admit them to the “Makarios Children’s Home” or to secondary boarding schools, always under our care and responsibility. In this way we ensure not only their education but their smooth re-entry in society.

Moreover, we offer medical care food and clothing to children who are kept with their imprisoned mothers. At the Women’s Prison of Nakuru, more than 30 children under four years are kept in prison with their mothers and live under completely inappropriate conditions. The violence between inmates takes often-such an extent, which forces the children to experience extreme situations for their age.
